Like Ukraine, Biden Would Shield Taiwan if attacked by China, says U.S. President

President of United State Joe Biden said that the United State would intervene militarily if China tried to take Taiwan by force.

Biden said that Washington willing to shield Taiwan military if the self-governed island is attacked by means of Beijing.

China has warned that the United States is “playing with fire” after heating up the China and Taiwan crisis.

The Chinese State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office stated on Monday that the United State is “using the ‘Taiwan card’ to contain China, and will itself get burned”.

State outlet Xinhua referred to the office’s spokesperson Zhu Fenglian as announcing that he urges the United States to “stop any remarks or movements that violate” earlier established concepts between Beijing and Washington.

However, the White House disputed the comments, saying they did not reflect a change in United State policy.

It was the third time in recent months that Biden had said the US would protect Taiwan from a Chinese attack, but the White House rejected that statement.

During a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo, Biden was asked whether the US is willing to go further to help Taiwan in the event of an invasion, and how it differs from the US stance on Ukraine .

"You don't want to be involved in the Ukraine conflict militarily for obvious reasons. Would you be willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if that happened?" a reporter asked. "Yes," Biden replied, released by Kompas.com, Monday (23/5/2022). "That's the commitment we made."
